Summary

The TurboAnt X7 Max is the latest $500 commuter electric scooter from TurboAnt. It has a 350 watt front hub motor and a detachable battery mounted in the steering tube. It has decent power and range for its price. The 10 inch pneumatic tires give it a smooth ride. It is one of the best $500 electric scooters available today and should be considered if you are looking for a new e-scooter.

Turboant X7 Max Review and Test

The Turboant has a line of electric scooters that have been gaining popularity in recent years. The latest model, the X7 Max, is a top-of-the-line product that offers riders simple controls and good performance. This includes a max speed of 20 mph, a max range of 32 miles, and a detachable battery. Other features include disc and electronic braking, an innovative LCD display, and built-in safety features that make it perfect for riders of all ages.

The new TurboAnt X7 Max is an upgrade to their previous X7 Pro model. It doesn’t have a huge change in overall specs. It is a completely new design. It has improvements over almost every part of the scooter.

Here is a quick list of what has changed for the X7 Max over the X7 Pro

• Detachable battery has double latches and key lock
• The software and user interface has been redesigned to be more user friendly

1 – Detachable Battery

The X7 Max battery attaches to the steering tube leaving the deck clean and open. The good side of this is the battery is easy to remove and take with you. The downside to this is the deck is very lightweight and easy to swing if you tip the handlebars forward a little.

2 – 350 Watt Front Hub Motor

The X7 Max is powered with a 350 watt brushless front hub motor. It also provides braking force when the brakes are activated.

3 – Dual braking system

This electric scooter has an electronic braking system on the front wheel and a disc brake on the rear wheel. This combination has always given plenty of stopping power. The X7 Max no longer has a foot brake in the rear fender for stopping the rear wheel. We don’t miss this as most riders never use it.

4 – 10 inch pneumatic wheels

The X7 Max has 10 inch pneumatic tires with inner tubes. They give a much smoother and more comfortable ride than hard rubber tires. The larger diameter also makes the scooter smoother and more efficient than scooters with smaller 8 inch wheels.

5 – Power (8.5/10)

Top Speed

The X7 Max has a published top speed of 20mph. The fastest we were able to get it to go was 18.3mph as measured by a Garmin GPS. We tried several passes and some slight downhill paths and that was the max speed we could get the X7 Max to go on flat ground.

Hill Climbing

We took the TurboAnt X7 Max to our standard hill climbing test hill. This is a 0.5 mile hill with 100 feet of elevation gain. It has 2 sections of 10% grade. We use a 250 lb rider for our test. The X7 Max was able to climb the hill in 3 minutes and 31 seconds with an average speed of 8.48 mph. This was 43 seconds faster than the TurboAnt M10 Lite took to get up the hill. It is about average for a $500 electric scooter.

6 – Range (7.5/10)

The published range for the X7 Max is 32 miles. We took the X7 Max out to a flat bike path with smooth pavement and only a few stops. We rode the scooter as close to 15mph as possible with our 250 lb test rider. We were able to get it to go 12.83 miles.

The X7 Max has a 360 watt (36 volt * 10 ah) battery. For comparison, the GoTrax G4 has a 374 watt (36 volt * 10.4 ah) battery. The GoTrax G4 went 14.1 miles on the same path with the same rider. The TurboAnt X7 Max range is right where we expected it to be for that size battery.

7 – Ride Quality (7.5/10)

The 10 inch pneumatic tires do a good job of absorbing bumps and cracks in the pavement. I prefer air tires over rigid tires on any scooter because of the extra smoothness and traction you get. I have ridden the X7 on a lot of Michigan’s finest pavement with cracks and potholes and found it comfortable to ride.

Steering feels good. The handlebars are a touch on the narrow side but feel good when riding it. I didn’t find any lack of stability or difficulty turning the X7.

Large deck

The deck has plenty of foot room for 2 adult sized feet. The deck casting has a smooth ramp up at the front that lets you put your front foot a little more forward than on most other scooters. There isn’t a frame tube welded to the front of the deck that you have to squeeze your foot next to.

8 – Braking (8)

The X7 Max stops with authority. The brakes have a strong feel right from the beginning of the handle squeeze. Maybe a little bit too strong. It has no problem stopping quickly from full speed.

9 – Controls (8.5/10)

Drive modes

The TurboAnt X7 Max has 3 drives modes making it good for any kind of rider. The modes are Eco, Comfort, and Sport

• Eco Mode – This has a reduced top speed and limits the motor power. This mode maximizes the range you can get from your scooter.
• Comfort Mode – This is a balanced mode that offers more power and acceleration than Eco mode while still giving you great range.
• Sport Mode – This mode allows the scooter to hit its 20mph top speed. It opens up full power on the motor. This will give you the best acceleration. It will give you the best power for hill climbing or heavier riders.

Disc and electronic braking

The X7 Max has very strong feeling brakes. The brakes have a strong sensitive feel as soon as you squeeze the lever. They can bring the scooter to a screeching stop right now with a good squeeze. Both brakes are activated by squeezing one lever.

Cruise control

The cruise control activates when you hold full throttle down for several seconds. The scooter will beep when it activates. It won’t turn on while holding the throttle at any partial setting. There is no way to deactivate the cruise control in the settings if you don’t like that feature.

Because the scooter speed levels are set at 6mph, 10mph and 20mph, you really can’t set cruise control to any other speeds. It only activates when throttle is full down. This is where a 15mph speed settting would be really nice. 20mph can feel fast if you are riding on a bike or walking path with a lot of pedestrians or bicycles.

Bell

There is a bell on the left handlebar. It’s in a good position for finger access while riding.

Lighting

The X7 Max has a headlight and small tail light for night riding. The light is bright enough for street riding and makes it a lot easier for cars to see you.

10 – Construction (7/10)

The TurboAnt X7 Max has a modern look with its curved low profile deck. It has a more advanced look to it than most other similar priced scooters that have deck mounted batteries.

Cast Aluminum Deck

The X7 Max has a 19 inch deck that is 4.7-6.7 inches wide. This is longer and wider than the X7 Pro allowing scooter riders a more comfortable stance. The deck is also higher off the ground giving you more ground clearance. It has more curvature for a more ergonomic stance. The deck is a nice improvement over the X7 Pro deck which could feel a little cramped for people with larger feet.

Folding Mechanism

The folding mechanism on the X7 Max is easy to use and works well. It has a single action latch with a safety catch on the bottom of the steering tube. It has a simple but effective catch on the rear fender and handlebar.

The latch on the steering tube is straight forward and works. We didn’t notice any slop in the steering tube once it was locked in place.

To latch the handlebar to the rear fender you need to push down on the rear fender and flex it. This will allow it to catch the handlebar. To unfold the scooter you need to push down and flex the rear fender again to unhook the handlebars. This is a simple and effective solution for hooking the handlebars to the fender and it works.

When you fold and unfold the scooter it helps to put one foot on the scooter deck to hold it in place. The battery is in the steering tube, and the deck is light and lifts off the ground easily. The folding mechanism is tight and takes some effort to move. I find that if I don’t step on the deck while unfolding the scooter the rear wheel will lift off the ground and swing over and hit my leg.

11 – Assembly

Assembly is very quick and easy. There are only 2 steps. Slide the brake lever onto the handlebar and tighten a bolt. Screw the 2 handlebar grips on. You’re done. It took me about 15 minutes to go from opening the box to ready to ride (not counting charging the battery).

Recommendation – Buy or No Buy?

If you want an electric scooter for commuting or running errands and the removable battery is important then check out the TurboAnt X7 Max. It has a competitive top speed, range, and hill climbing. The removable battery adds some pain to unfolding the scooter, it’s worth it for the extra range it can give you.
